Ready for the Hurricane Season?

Rachael Eslao • May 21, 2021

Soon Hurricane Season will start in Central Houston. Are you ready?

If it is your first storm, or if it is your twentieth, now is the time to prepare yourself, your family, and your home! Here is a quick checklist to get you ready for the upcoming hurricane season!

  • Don't let your supplies run out.  Make sure you have enough water, food, and other essentials stored away for 3 days. For more information, consult FEMA’s hurricane season tips.
  • You need to check for leaking. Make sure that your door, window, or wall are functioning properly so that water can't enter.
  • Expect extended outages. You don't have to buy a whole-house generator – just one that can run a refrigerator and a few other essentials. Consider what you could not live without, such as a sump pump or well pump, and pick a generator that meets your needs.
  • Trim the trees and shrubs. Make sure your trees are well trimmed so wind passes through with no damage. Consider regarding around trees to strengthen the ground and give roots something to hold on to.
  • Roof Inspection. Make sure you have your roof inspected every two years or at least annually. This will keep your roof in perfect condition should a storm hit.
  • Clean out the gutters. This will prevent roof damage and flood risk inside your home.
  • Get rid of clutter. Put things you no longer need inside. Bring lightweight items like patio furniture, toys, and trash cans inside.
  • Protect your home. The installation of window shutters, roof clips, anchor fuel tanks, and garage door braces is highly recommended as well. All items should be professionally installed.
  • Ensure that you're covered. Purchase additional flood insurance if necessary through your homeowner’s policy or the National Flood Insurance Program. Also, check that your insurance company will cover you if something happens to your existing roof.
  • Plan ahead. Prepare in advance where to go when a storm comes. Have a safe escape route in place, the location of official shelters, and a place to meet if separated. Don't forget prescription medications or plans for your pets!
